New Super Dungeons and Dragons
Of course the internet is all about D&D Next today and the public beta. I already posted a little too much about it, but I’ve got to come back to it. Why? Because Adam Koebel said a very smart thing (I know, I’m as surprised as you are):
The parallel here is like, Basic is Super Mario Bros and D&DNext is New Super Mario Bros Wii. It’s pretty much exactly the same, but it’s polished and incorporates junk from the various games between them. That’s what I’m saying —D&DNext is Super Mario Bros with the tail from SMB3 and the item-chucking from SMB2 and Yoshi and simultaneous multiplayer. I didn’t hate New Super Mario Bros Wii but I sure didn’t play it through more than once. Whereas I will still throw myself at Super Mario Bros ’cause it’s so perfect.
That’s pretty much the perfect analogy for my reaction to the playtest doc so far: it’s a nice cleanup of a classic idea. I’ll probably end up buying it. But it’s nothing that really excites me.

This sounds suspiciously like a Burrito Quest rating…
Brilliantly well put.
I’ll be sure to let Adam know
I thought you were dead-set against buying it due to the RPGPundit fiasco? Did your mind change on that count?
I’m still not planning on buying it. Bad phrasing on my part: that’s my reaction to New SMB. I’m still not planning on buying a game the embraces someone who is so dead set on turning gamer against gamer.
